The key to effective knowledge based systems involves the empowerment of users. This user empowerment is achieved through User Centric Knowledge and Data Engineering.

In this area, we have developed and applied techniques for:

• user centric management and governance of pervasive service environments;
• user (learner) personalisation of technology enhanced learning;
• user governance in autonomic systems;
• user centred design of web service composition.
